A useful repair note has four parts
- Verification: How the symptom or request was confirmed.
- Testing and findings: Relevant inspection results, measurements, codes, or observations.
- Work performed: The actual repair, service, or adjustment completed.
- Final check: How operation was checked afterward.
Complete technician note examples
Brake noise and vibration
Road tested vehicle and verified pulsation through the steering wheel during moderate braking from highway speed. Inspected front brakes and measured rotor lateral runout; left front rotor was outside specification. Front pads showed uneven contact. Replaced front pads and rotors, cleaned hub faces, lubricated required contact points, and torqued wheels to specification. Burnished pads and road tested. Braking is smooth and no abnormal noise is present.
Check-engine light with misfire
Verified check-engine light and rough idle. Scanned modules and found a cylinder-specific misfire code. Monitored misfire data and confirmed the affected cylinder at idle. Swapped the ignition coil with an adjacent cylinder; the misfire followed the coil. Replaced the failed coil, cleared codes, and completed a road test. Misfire counters remained at zero and the warning light did not return.
Battery discharged overnight
Charged and tested battery; battery passed after charging. Verified charging-system output. Performed key-off draw test after allowing modules to enter sleep mode and measured excessive current. Isolated draw to the glove-box lamp circuit and found the lamp remained on with the compartment closed. Replaced the faulty switch and repeated the test. Key-off draw returned to an acceptable level and vehicle restarted normally after the test period.
Air conditioning blows warm
Verified warm vent temperature with A/C selected. Recorded ambient temperature and system pressures. Leak inspection found refrigerant dye at the condenser seam; no additional leak was observed. Recovered refrigerant, replaced condenser and required seals, evacuated system, confirmed vacuum held, and recharged to the specified capacity. Verified compressor operation and recorded cold center-vent temperature after repair.
Oil leak diagnosis and repair
Inspected engine and verified oil residue concentrated around the valve-cover perimeter. Cleaned affected area and ran engine to confirm the leak source. Removed valve cover, replaced gasket and required seals, cleaned mating surfaces, and reassembled components. Ran engine to operating temperature and reinspected. No active oil leak observed at this time.
Alignment and steering pull
Road tested vehicle and verified pull to the right on a level road. Checked tire pressures and inspected tires and steering/suspension components; no looseness found. Measured alignment and found front toe and right-front camber outside specification. Adjusted alignment to specification, centered steering wheel, and road tested. Vehicle now tracks straight with steering wheel centered.
Scheduled maintenance
Performed requested engine-oil and filter service using the specified oil quantity and grade. Set oil level, inspected for leaks, rotated tires, set tire pressures, and completed the shop's maintenance inspection. Reset maintenance reminder and verified normal operation.
Concern could not be duplicated
Reviewed reported operating conditions with repair order. Scanned all applicable modules; no related diagnostic codes were stored. Inspected visible connectors, wiring, fluid levels, and related components with no fault observed. Road tested vehicle under the described speed, temperature, and load conditions but could not duplicate the concern at this time. No repair performed. Recommend returning when the symptom is present and recording conditions, warning messages, or video if safe to do so.
